Downtown Los Angeles has lost another iconic establishment with the closure of the Original Pantry Cafe, which had been serving the community since 1924. The diner, located at 9th and Figueroa, was known for its round-the-clock service, catering to both night owls and early risers.
News of the closure sparked a final rush of patrons, eager to have one last meal at the historic eatery. However, the shuttering was met with resistance as the remaining 25 employees, supported by their labor union, Unite Here Local 11, refused to leave after receiving their final paychecks.
Despite a rich history of survival, including relocating to accommodate freeway construction in the 1950s and a land deal takeover by former Mayor Richard Riordan in 1981, the landmark diner ultimately could not withstand the changing landscape of Downtown L.A.
The closure underscores ongoing shifts in the area’s commercial real estate market, as legacy businesses struggle with rising costs, changing consumer habits, and evolving urban development.
