**250 Starbucks Closures: What Landlords Should Be Watching**

By Brandmarch1 min read

Starbucks announced on September 24 that it will close roughly 250 underperforming stores across North America — about 1% of its footprint — as part of CEO Brian Niccol's "Back to Starbucks" turnaround. The closures hit Saturday, and the cost is expected to run about $300 million, mostly lease exits and separation costs.

The pain is concentrated: California accounts for 64 closures, New York 17, Texas 14, with the rest spread across the U.S. and Canada. These weren't picked at random — the company said these locations couldn't deliver the customer experience Starbucks wants and had no clear path to acceptable performance. Several will be familiar to anyone in the business: high-visibility corners and endcaps that simply never turned.

For retail owners, this is 250 well-located boxes coming back to market at once. Starbucks stores tend to anchor foot traffic, so the landlords who move first get a shot at backfilling with emerging brands that could never justify a standalone site on their own.
