Newbury Comics

Newbury Comics: The Global Architect of Pop Culture Heritage and the Vinyl Renaissance Founded in 1978 by Mike Dreese and John Brusger as a comic book shop in a Boston studio apartment, Newbury Comics (newburycomics.com) is the premier independently-owned music, comic, and pop culture anchor in the Northeast. Entering 2026, the brand is a "Fortress Asset" in the specialty retail sector, operating 29+ locations across Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maine. Known for its "Always Morph or Die" philosophy, Newbury Comics successfully transitioned from a record store into a multifaceted pop culture powerhouse, integrating exclusive limited-run vinyl, high-velocity collectibles (Funko, Manga), and artisanal lifestyle merchandise. The 2026 guest experience—defined by its "Cultural Discovery" model—combines a high-growth e-commerce vertical with physical "treasure hunt" environments. For landlords, Newbury Comics represents a high-integrity, institutional-grade tenant that anchors premier high-streets (e.g., Newbury St, Harvard Square) and high-traffic regional malls with a brand synonymous with regional loyalty, technical product expertise, and alternative retail stability.
